Umbrella Tree sits on the exempt species list in 14 of the 20 councils Pro Climbing Tree Services covers, so in most of Sydney it can be removed without a permit. Heritage listings and significant tree registers still override that.
Large glossy leaves with seven to sixteen leaflets radiating from a central point like an umbrella. Spectacular red flower spikes held above the canopy like octopus arms, followed by dark fruit. Often multi stemmed.
Planted as a screen and now naturalised across the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, Lower North Shore, Northern Beaches and Southern Sydney, frequently right against buildings and fences.
Exempt in nearly every council covered here and a frequent call out because of drain and wall damage. The difficulty is usually location rather than size, since so many grow hard against structures. Complete stump and root removal matters more with this species than most.
