Port Jackson Fig is a protected tree in effectively every council Pro Climbing Tree Services covers. Expect to need a tree permit, or a development application where the property is heritage listed or in a heritage conservation area.
A broad spreading tree with leathery dark green leaves that are often rust coloured and furry underneath. Small figs ripen yellow to red. Mature trees develop heavy buttress roots and sometimes aerial roots over sandstone.
Native to Sydney sandstone headlands and gullies, common through the Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, Mosman and the harbour foreshore, and widely planted in parks.
Explicitly excluded from the Northern Beaches exempt Ficus rule, so it is protected while most other figs in that LGA are not. Mature specimens are often heritage or significant tree listed, pushing the pathway to a development application. Root systems are extensive enough that removal rarely resolves all the structural damage on its own.

No. The Northern Beaches exemption covers all Ficus species except Moreton Bay Fig, Port Jackson Fig and Sandpaper Fig, which are the three natives. A permit is required.
Not immediately. Fig roots travel a long way from the trunk and the existing damage remains. Pipe relining or replacement is usually still needed after removal.
